One of the strongest tools, which can be used in fighting the biggest problems of today, is education and especially education in an early age. One of the increasing issues many countries face is the violence and crime in everyday life. Quality education has proven itself as an effective measure against violence, although this fact is very often overlooked.
Especially in early childhood, education can make a great impact on children’s behavior and keep them from committing crime in the future. Some studies have shown that children who don’t attend preschool programs are 70% more likely to commit crime by the age of 18. The reason why young children are a specially affected group is because children in an early stage of life are experiencing in this time frame the biggest mental health development. In the first three years of life, children gain some of the most important behavioral traits, which will affect their future lifestyles and relationships. In these years they learn how to deal with confrontations and how to solve problems. It is crucial that children in this age gain skills of solving conflicts in an appropriate way rather than losing their temperate and feeling frustrated.
If a child is mentored by a teacher or any other qualified adult, the child learns how to channel negative energy into something constructive, which might not be the case if the child isn’t under a supervision of a parent or a qualified teacher. Qualified teachers are one of the important influencers during childhood. They set positive role models, which can affect the development of young children in great measure. Role models are adults, to which children look up to, and when children lack attention from parents with busy work schedules, teachers can provide great replacement. When children have no positive role models, they might look up to negative ones and learn from their actions and start imitating their behavior. Education is the key to providing legitimate working opportunities and this effect is regarded as a long-term effect education has on reducing crime. This way, people are guided to decent working placements with decent salaries, which also reduces poverty because poverty is one of the most common reasons why people start dealing with crime in the first place.
On another hand, keeping children away from the streets lowers the changes of them getting involved in crime, which can be seen as a short-term educational impact. Another way education affects crime reduction is that people who are provided with quality education tend to be more patient and develop a certain aversion to risk. They are prone to think more about the consequences their behavior and more importantly misbehavior. Educated people also chose their environment more carefully and prefer friendships with educated people and people who aren’t attracted to crime and violence. This way people stay away from influence from people with criminal backgrounds and build healthy interactions.
Although governments tend to fight crimes with sharpening punishments and setting stricter rules, they always overlook the importance of investing in education for both young children and adolescents. By solving problems from its roots we provide long-term solutions and build a better and safer environment for the future.
